what's going on behind closed doors

by:

in light of recent events, a lot of POCs are dropping their houses (I've heard KD especially come up). more needs to be done to support these women. instagram posts only do so much. POC, we accept you with open arms and we need to do better as a community in whole.

Sororities like KD especially really posed themselves to be allies at first, but after their “7 day free trial” of being woke ended, they immediately avoided the subject. There are maybe 3 POC left in KD

AXO’s president is doing an amazing job at directly speaking out on these issues and being resourceful to her members. Meanwhile a lot of sororities don’t even have someone or a body of people that represent diversity and inclusion (or if they do, they made it after these events)

axo is setting a great example for all sororities. Sad to see KD poc members dropping, no sister should feel discriminated by their own sorority. My heart goes out to those girls.

I’m so glad to hear that AXO is being very supportive and understanding however, do it because it’s the right thing to do, not for the pat on the back!!

7 day free trial? Wow.

What should be happening in that you feel these chapters aren’t doing? What could they do right now?

I believe they are all embracing the fact that change is needed.

I think your concerns should be directed to the head of Greek life at uark vs. taking on individual chapters. Across the board programming and development for the whole Greek community. It is difficult bc anything anyone tries to point out comes across as upranking or superficial - and right now there are deeper issues?

Do you think our concerns haven’t been addressed?? Where are the Panhellenic posts about this? Why do we have to beg

This is just another lame attempt to bring one chapter down to make another chapter look good- that you would even think that websites like greekrank are factual is not only funny but incredulous- seriously? KD is doing fine and so are all the other chapters- we live in a brand new world and every from recruitement to the sorority experience will be different

I get what you’re saying, but maybe some chapters do need to be called out. The Greek system needs to change across the board, and one way to do that is by pinpointing the issues within each chapter and regulating that. For KD, their POC is dropping after feeling like their sisters didn’t care. For Chi O, they’re being accused of deleting negative comments from Black women who deserve to be heard. If I was a PNM, I would want to know that information. I would hate for someone to go through recruitment and get a bid to a chapter they end up feeling excluded and not valued in. Chapters need to do better as a whole, but some more than others. We’re all learning together, but some have further to go; that’s not bringing a chapter down but rather showing the risks associated with maintaining an outdated image.

Anyone who got a bid from KD would feel loved and valued. They have one of the strongest sisterhoods on campus. Honestly this not a post trying to be helpful it's a post trying to tear a great sorority down. I have friends who are KDs and l am not hearing that rumor- if you are this desperate to tear KD down you have a mean girl rep or you feel threatened- there is no other way around it- KD won tons of awards and top three in grades, gorgeous new house- sounds like threatened to me

I don’t doubt that KD is a great sorority! But the fact is that almost all of their POC have dropped within the last week or so. It’s not a coincidence—they spoke out and their calls for change went unheard but exec (from what I was told by a KD). Facing the facts is not tearing a house down. They have room to improve and this should be a wake up call for all houses to do MORE for their POC members.

their “sisterhood” is built on cliques and elected councils that hasn’t cared about bettering the sorority for years. they don’t try to back their current members and only care about recruitment

Tearing down houses is not what is needed. Actives went thru recruitment. If anyone quits- it is on the quitter. Lost opportunity.

Think bigger-
There is procedure for all of the chapters.

What does that even mean? Girls don’t sign up to be discriminated against by their sisters. If you see it as tearing down a house rather than raising a very distinct issue, you’re a part of the problem. There is procedure, sure, but procedure can’t be changed? Can’t be modified to support the women in their chapter asking for support? I seriously can’t understand how chapters can essentially ignore the calls for change from their members and it just go unanswered. And it’s not just KD. Again, Panhellenic needs to do better as a whole. And what is Panhellenic doing? An IG post or two? Everyone, all chapters, Panhellenic in whole, EVERYONE needs to do better.

I believe in organizations there is procedure. And there is a process to change a procedure.

It would be devastating if anyone in these groups felt discrimination of any kind. And these houses would be horrified to find they had actives who felt that way.

To be in a sorority is to be in something bigger than yourself.

And I’m not speaking for a specific house.
Discussion is good. It should be happening.

Those who leave the table can’t be a part of the discussion/change.

Tensions are high- I would encourage those who left to go back. They are wanted and needed.

From what I heard about the situation, the KDs tried to speak to their exec board and they were left with no answer or a superficial response. What do you elect they do then? Continue to participate (and pay money!!) in a group that they don’t feel welcome in, all for the sake of being a part of the conversation? They TRIED. It’s not the responsibility of POC to educate their sisters about what they need to be talking about. Bottom line is they tried to raise the convo, only for it to not continue. And if you’re not a POC, maybe consider your role in not continuing the conversation. It’s on YOU to do more and support your sisters, not act like the conversation can’t continue without them.

if the poc members that dropped were “wanted and needed” they would’ve listened to their concerns the first time instead of it having to get to them dropping

PNMs please review this information carefully and think about who you want to call your sisters. Do you want to add to the group of women tearing their sisters down or do you want to raise your voice with your sisters and make change in Panhellenic?
