voting rules

by:

Does each sorority have their own voting system? Do they rank you before the first day like 1-1000 or just put you in a yes no or maybe pile until actual recruitment starts? I heard at one house a member’s vote counts more if they are a chapter legacy which is why legacies always get picked which doesn’t seem fair at all.

Every house is different and it’s confidential so you won’t know until you’re on the other side.

Not every house gives equal voting. Some your legacy status matters. Others if you’re an officer or what year you are. All depends and you’ll never know so don’t worry about it.

I have never heard of members who were legacies having more voting power and would say that you are confused on that rumor. It is true that legacy PNM's have a slight advantage during recruitment, and those with direct ties to a chapter here even more so because of connections. But once you're initiated, you're a sister like everyone else, legacy or not. Any influence a member has in her chapter is from seniority, office held, and plain old earned respect. Plus you are assuming that one legacy would automatically choose another legacy for membership no matter what and that is just not how it works.

Legacies do NOT always get picked; not by a long shot. There are enough legacies going through to fill entire classes and then some, so it's not a gimme at all; best fit is most important. Let me just say that when I hear "not fair" about legacies, I want to scream. It is FAIR that legacies get special consideration; it is a very special thing in sororities to share letters with your mom or sister or grandma, no matter what school, and that bond is valued. And for women who have been members of a chapter here, then hell yeah their girls get extra attention. At the same time, it is also FAIR that legacy doesn't guarantee a bid because they may not fit with the chapter and there's just not room for them all. Non-legacies say legacies having an advantage isn't fair and legacies and their families say that getting cut isn't fair. Enough.

I was a legacy and I know how much my mom wanted me to be a part of her sorority. She didn’t put pressure on me or anything , it was just obvious in how she talked her sorority up. I love being in the same sorority as my mother and I know I will probably feel even stronger if I have a daughter. That being said not every legacy gets the opportunity I did and it does make me sad for them and their mom/sister ect... Recruitment is difficult and being a legacy only gives you a small advantage.

All of this is behind doors until you are in you will not know. I will say that I have not heard that just because you are a legacy in the house your vote counts more.

I'm a mom of a PNM and involved in Greek Life not at UArk, so I will spill a little tea as an example.

Sorority XYZ gives a max of 20 points to each PNM. Your GPA is 5 of those points, so if you have a 3.78 that is your score there. There is another possible 5 points for activities & 5 points for leadership.

That leaves just 5 points for conversation. Anyone who knows you or meets you at the recruitment rounds can give you a 1-5 (no one is a zero) & those are all averaged together.

Most PNM's in this scenario fall between a 10-15 total with every decimal point in between. Hit sort on the Google doc & there is your invitation list to next round.

Why are you in here if you are a mom not even at this school? Or is your daughter a pnm here and you are an alum somewhere else?

Hey mom, your example is not helpful and just makes pnm's more nervous. They can't do anything about any of this stuff so it serves no purpose. Do you run your mouth off like this at wherever you are so involved? God help them with alumnae like you who should be the ones to know better.

why so rude? I think her response was very informative and helpful and might help calm a PNM and help them understand that there are formulations in them getting chosen /cut etc....
