recommendation letters

by:

Hi guys! I’m not a pnm for this year but will hopefully be one here next year! This school is my top choice. I have a question about recommendation letters. Did most of the alumna you asked prefer physical copies of the packets or digital copies? I am planning on buying printed packets online but I don’t want to do that if it’s not necessary. My other question is if it’s okay for the alumna to send physical copies even if the sorority prefers electronic ones and vice versa.

Thanks to anyone who answers! No one I know is Greek so I have no idea about any of this stuff.

Oh, one more question! If the chapter says they prefer online forms, should I indicate that to the alumna? If so, should that be on the cover letter or on a separate note?

You do not need to do as much prep as you have, especially so early. I’d find who you are going to ask and their numbers but don’t go out searching yet. Then if there are a few sororities you don’t have letters for, search those out around March or April next year. Just ask them to write you a letter of rec and they know exactly what to do. If they have any questions about anything, you can just find the answers on each sororities website but all women will know what to do. This isn’t an issue for you.

- You do not need expensive printed packets online. Just get some plain nice heavy paper for resume and cover letter to your writers. Make your resume look visually good yourself with a monogram or name on top in a good design or interesting font. Most will be sent electronically, if at all. Several sororities only want their national's form, which will include all the stuff on your resume anyway.
- Cover Letter to Alumna: Include everything the chapter states on the uark greeklife site for what/how they want the recs, their national sorority website to get the necessary forms, the chapter address, and chapter recruitment chairman contact in case the writer has any questions. Writers need to do what the chapter wants so do give your writers all the info they need up front.
- In the Packet: Cover letter, resume, photo(s). Also if chapter wants snail mail then include for your writers a large enough envelope to accommodate photos and everything and enough stamps for postage. The easier you make this for your writers the more likely they will get it done and sent!
- Also for You: Thank you notes to be sent to rec writers. Send them either before recruitment as a reminder to get them done if they haven't already, or after you get your bid and be sure to tell them where you landed because they just want to know.
- Don't assume that "all women know what to do." Be as clear and organized for your writers as possible and very appreciative.

Expensive Printed packets are a thing of the past. What Details says above is correct. Most will just be sent electronically as an attachment for your alumna rec writer to review. She may or may not even need to attach it to the electronic rec that gets sent. But do follow up with written Thank you's. I personalized each letter to my rec writer letting them know exactly what was needed and wanted by their particular house and included links and web addresses as requested by each sorority.
