genuine question about recs
by: oos pnm
Okay so I’m coming here from far out of state and don’t have connections to this school or any of the sororities here. Its also hard to find recs since pretty much no one here does sororities. Should I even bother getting recs to the “top” houses since there’s no chance of me getting into them anyway? And what about “bottom” houses since I know they aren’t as choose-y and will take girls without recs?

I didn’t think I knew anyone in sororities either. Get them to all the houses that you can, even the top houses. It does matter. You may be able to get into a bottom house without a rec or the new sorority on campus but please give yourself the best chance. The houses will find it lazy and you’ll have no change in an top or even upper middle house if you don’t even try. My mom wasn’t in a sorority and neither were any of her friends. You just need to be proactive and you’ll find people. Don’t slack off or you won’t end up where you want to or anywhere at all.

Does your area have a Panhellenic association? That is a solid starting place. They will hold a spring meeting/event to discuss recruitment and offer info for contacts in association for potential Recs.
If you have a FB and post you are going thru recruitment at UARK and list the chapters needed- you will be surprised whonyou already know who is Greek and more than willing to help you. Some of those Greeks may know of another alum to help you.
Try a few of your teachers- if you are a good student and they were Greek- they are usually happy to help. Ask them privately if they were in a sorority-

Definitely get as many recs as you can! Start now asking your teachers. I was in the same situation. I called Nationals of some sororities that I couldn’t find anyone I knew and they were able to put me in touch with someone in my area. Also, call the Panhellenic Alumni group in the closest large city in your area. They will help you find someone. Turns out most of the recs I got that way were friends of friends so they could really be comfortable with writing a rec. There was a bottom house that I couldn’t get a rec for and I was cut from that house even though I had all the other creds, grades, convo skills, cute, etc. and ended up going a higher house than the bottom house that cut me. You never know and you don’t want that to be a reason you don’t move forward. Good Luck!

There was 1 house I had difficulty finding an alum. So I googled the name of the sorority alum area group. They had a system set up for you to submit a resume’ and pict so they could consider writing a recommendation. Many of the area alum groups will have a designated rec chair person named on their site.
Good luck.

Thanks guys. I have spent the last hour or so looking for alumnae organizations near me, but there are only two in my state and they’re very far away. I’ve looked up the individual sororities and have only found websites for 5 of them or so, but none of them have a section for PNMs looking for recs.
I know a handful of girls from my school who are in sororities now. Which sororities allow collegiate members to write recommendations?
I also have one adult that was in a sorority but it’s not a sorority I have a chance at. I’m hoping she knows some other people but a lot of the sororities don’t have many chapters in my state.

I do not believe current active sorority members can write a letter of recommendation, however I believe they can write a letter of support. But it is a Rec letter you need.
On the UARK Panhellenic page, there are links to various Panhellenic groups. Have you checked that?
