honesty

by:

I'm an incoming freshman PNM, and honestly the idea of making sisters and friends through greek life sounds great, but the more I've done my research, the more I can tell how unauthentic the process actually is. It matters more of who you know, rather than one's personality or beliefs. I see people who break the rules and aren't competitive academically get more bids than a girl who follows rules and has a 4.0-- all because of friends they have. The system is flawed, and honestly social media makes it even worse. A girl is judged based off what she posts, where she goes, and how she can sell her lifestyle-- automatically discounting those who may not have the wealth or tools to do so. Its so disheartening to see this, but this superficial method will never change.
With that, I hope you all going through recruitment have fun, and I hope the sorority sisters hosting recruitment try to look past a girl's wealth or her appearance!! You may be surprised.

I honestly think it is 95% who you know. It really doesn't matter what you look like or how much money you have. Just take a look at some (actually quite a few) of the girls in the top 4 houses. They are ALL definitely not rich and pretty. In fact many are down right homely, they just know the right people. If you are from OOS or have zero connections, even if you are smart, pretty, rich and have a ton of followers, you will more than likely NOT make it into a top house. It's all about who and how many people you have pulling for you in a house.

You are correct that all girls in top houses are not rich or pretty. Maybe because we don’t recruit based on your looks or money. We also have a lot of girls from OOS. We look for other qualities in a pnm. Yes, connections can help but they will not get you a bid. Quite honestly to get a bid to a top house you need a high gpa. I’m talking 3.6 or higher. The 3.4 is for legacies. Lots of leadership activities. We don’t even count the stuff you can just sign up for like Key Club or your church youth group. We also don’t care about cheer or dance. Were you elected president of a club or org.? Or did you do something unique like start your own nonprofit or elected an ambassador to your city? Were your recs from someone who really knew you? Not just someone that was some lady from church or your mom’s coworker. Was your rec an involved alumni? Not just an alum that paid her dues and hasn’t been involved since. Do you have a spotless reputation? Meaning everyone we asked about you had nothing but super positive things to say. This includes people we ask who aren’t your closest friends. Do you have a clean social media presence? No mention of drinking not even as a joke. No skimpy bikini pics. Are your friends someone we would want to see visiting you at our house? Yes, we judge you if your friends don’t have a good rep. Do you come to recruitment excited or do you already have a bad attitude about a house that hasn’t even met you yet? Those are things we consider on if you get an invite back after round one. Not if you are rich or pretty or what state you live in.

I cheered for U of A and they placed me front and center during recruitment every single year and then were jealous and talked about me the rest of the year. PC 2014

As an active Greek for 4 years it is a very smalll part of your college experience. Greek life for girls is attending wristband functions at frat houses which anyone with a wristband can attend, not just sorority girls. Sorority life is weekly chapter meetings, formal and a couple of events a year.. None of the houses have something going on every week other than chapter meetings. After bid day there will be so many girls in your house you will not see until the next bid day!

Wow. Sorry that was your experience. Greek life has been a major part of my college experience. Part of pledgeship is getting to know all of your sisters. While it’s impossible to be best friends with everyone I do feel my sisters have my back. We see each other weekly at chapter meetings which in my house you are required to attend and all chapter functions. Not to mention in class and other places. My house has something going on all the time certainly not just chapter meetings. Philanthropy events, volunteering, socials, mixers. Perhaps weaker houses with poorer sisterhoods feel that way but I for one feel my sorority has shaped me to be the person I am today.

Love Greek life but if we are being honest the cheer post is 100% accurate! Some of the things about Greek life are super annoying and done just please alums who do not have a life. To be able to laugh about it makes it fun! Lighten up!
