pi phis and kappas??
by: future razorbackSo my mom was a pi phi at U of A, and still keeps up with her sisters and their daughters, donates for the new house, etc. I don't necessarily know any girls in the pi phi or kappa house but my mother has a lot of friends whose daughters are there and I know that is where i want to be next year (don't tell me to keep an open mind, I know my heart is just set on these two). I have a great GPA and ACT score, and was fairly involved in high school (played volleyball and church league basketball, attended academic summer programs, newspaper editor, state wide church youth officer, NHS, etc.) If I don't absolutely make a fool out of myself during recruitment, what is my chance of getting a bid to these houses?

It will help you through the first round that you are a Pi Phi legacy, but, that's it. After that, it's all on you. There are LOTS of legacies and many get cut every year. Almost every girl coming through has good grades and lots of activities. You will have to set yourself apart some how. Getting girls from your hometown to pull for you is the best way to get a bid from a competitive house. So, if you don't know any girls in the house that's gonna make it tougher. As far as having your heart set on one of these two houses before recruitment even starts --I hope it works out for you, but i think that you really should go in with an upen mind! You have to visit all the houses during the first round. So go in looking for houses you would like to be a part of even if the ones you think you might like don't work out--- because they may not!!! Put on your best smile and attitude at every house so that if you fall in love with one they will want you, too!! You think you know, but you really don't until you go and meet the girls in the houses. Good luck!!!

Oh, honey. I hope this works out for you but I don't have a good feeling:
First, you just put enough identifying info on the internet that all the other chapters can figure out who you are if they really want to.
Second, you don't even know any actives so how can you be so sure you're a perfect fit for PiPhi or Kappa? Your mom was here a long time ago.
Third, please realize that houses like PiPhi and Kappa have enough legacies coming through rush to fill 2 or 3 entire pledge classes some years, and many of those legacies have moms/sisters/grandmas who are as involved as your mom. Unless your mom is a national PiPhi officer or literally has a wing in the Arkansas house named after her, I don't think you have as big of an advantage as you think you do.
Last, hopefully this summer you will really think about this question: would you rather not be Greek at all if you get cut by PiPhi and Kappa? I'm not saying join the worst house here but there are quite a few other really desirable houses. Won't you feel left out as all your roomates and friends are getting their Big Sisses and hanging out with their pledge class and going to parties and sorority events. I hope you do decide to keep a more open mind beyond these two houses. Hope that it works out for you but you just never know- especially without the all-important in-house connections!
