greek row

by:

Hey all, I'm an ASU '89 grad here. Don't laugh. Just wanted to see what's been happening on campus... I live out east and my chapter is no longer active but I have heard that there's no Greek Row at ASU anymore, is that right?

I hear conflicting things because my buddies and I are out of touch, also my fraternity is trying to recolonize in the next couple of years so who knows if they're just saying things for donation money. But what's the story there?

Is the Greek System pretty much dead?

It's not dead, it just hit a rough patch. There's rumors that the Greek row will be rebuilt within the next few years.

Greek row won't get built. ASU has been talking about a replacement for alpha drive for over a decade. Definitely false promises. Some fraternities are taking it to themselves to get a house, by renovating existing apartment complexes/motels. Doing this and getting national/alumni to support the efforts is the way to go. But yea, there is still greek life at ASU, but it's been going downhill for over a decade and after 2010-2011 fell off a huge cliff.

Thanks for the updates. It sounds like no one knows sure what will happen to the Row. Did the school totally raze Alpha Drive? What's there now?

For the sake of all of all the fraternities and sororities at ASU I hope Greek Row comes back. It's the only way Greek Life will thrive there. Plus the thing mentioned about fraternities renovating motels or existing apartment complexes is nuts. Do zoning and housing laws in Tempe even allow that? It shifts the Greek housing and conduct problem from the school to the city. Maybe that was ASU's plan all along...

Right before fall 2011, every fraternity except sigma nu was forced to leave the row due to finally caving into threats of eminent domain. Then in spring 12, sig nu lost their charter and was forced to leave. Then in August 2012, the vacant buildings were torn down. Currently, what used to be alpha drive is now empty land. Zoning laws in Tempe allow fraternity housing, but that requires the owner of the building to want to go through the process. This is much easier if the building is owned by alumni or nationals. The complex FIJI resides in was zoned as a fraternity house.

ASU wants to turn former alpha drive into an ASU athletics area. They would move the football practice bubble there and try to transition the basketball practices there as well. It is rumored that the Cholla apartments will be torn down to make space for new greek housing starting by spring of 2016.
