any advice for a nervous pnm?

by: PNM

I'm a junior but I graduate in spring 18. I'm over 20 and my GPA is 2.7. What are the chances that I'll be able to find a house? I've read that a lot of people who get bids already know someone from the sorority. I also know that some of my friends got dropped pretty soon within rush because they have a weird and quirky personality. Is there a quota that sororities have to fill? How often are payments for the dues? How active do I have to be? Do I have to hang out with fraternities and go to date nights? I'm not a big party person but I do like to have fun and drink with friends. And honestly, do sororities go after girls with a "certain look" like only attractive girls, only a certain race of girls, only a certain weight of girls, style, etc.? Thank you to anyone who can answer all of my confusing questions lol!

You'll find a house. There are more spots available than girls going through recruitment at UH, it's not very competitive here. We have quotas and its 25-30 depending on the chapter. Dues are due every semester (ranging from $700-$1000, depends on the sorority) but they have payment plans. Phi Mu might not so inquire about that. You have mandatory events like meetings every Monday, philanthropy events, stuff that's obviously expected. But outside of the few mandatory events, you don't have to be very active. But what's the point of paying all that money if you aren't going to participate? You get what you put in and if you're only going to mandatory events it will just be a waste of money. The bonds of sisterhood are what separates us from a random club, and it's what makes that big price tag worth it. And you only get that by being active within the greek community and your chapter. If you take the time to look and talk to our chapters you'll see that we are all very diverse. This is Houston, not Alabama or somewhere. We have members of all races, sizes, economic backgrounds, religions, etc. Some are more diverse than others (SK and PM are more diverse than say Zeta and AXO for example). But we choose girls for their personality, not their looks. The same reason why rec letters arent a big deal here, we have a small greek life so we can't afford to be picky about silly things. It's not like we're picking from 1200 pnms, it's more like 200. So just do it!

You also don't have to party or hang out with frats. I've been in my sorority for over a year and I don't know or hang out with a single frat guy. But I still go out to parties on occasion. There will be girls in your chapter who love to party and some who never do. So you can have someone to go out with one night, and someone to stay home with next.

Thank you so much! You made me feel so much more relaxed about rushing.
