letters of rec

hey!! i'm going to be a freshman in the fall and i plan on rushing. i saw that the "top six" sororities on here are pretty competitive to get a bid and i was wondering if a letter of recommendation would help? do a lot of girls usually get letters or are they not really needed? thanks :)
