Sorority rush questions
by: barb
Hey everyone! I'm considering colleges for next year and I definitely want to rush. I have a few questions about rush at UCSB, which is one of my top schools:
- Is UCSB rush more on the laid back or difficult side?
- Are legacies a big deal at UCSB?
- Is it typical for girls to live in the sorority houses?
- Will they judge you by your Instagram following/account?
Thank you!

ucsb is a great school and i've loved my greek experience!
1. ucsb rush is pretty laid back. it's just conversations and houses work very hard to make all pnms feel comfortable.
2. legacies are not a big deal and Panhellenic has removed legacy consideration from recruitment - unless you bring up your legacy status, chapters have no idea.
3. yes - many sophomores live in the houses, each house is different but there's usually about 50-60 spaces.
4. unfortunately, some chapters are notorious for pre-judging PNMs based on their instagrams. however this is rare, and as a whole it does not matter. all the houses here are great.

im in a sorority :)
1. it depends on where you compare it to? way less intense than the south (like bama) but ppl do take it seriously. there's always COB (open bidding, occurs after formal) that is really laid back. it also depends on the sorority. some are way more high pressure than others (ex; pi phi/aphi).
2. not really. i can see it being helpful but it is definitely not super necessary. personally, when i rushed they didn't even ask about legacies but i mean it could definitely help if you brought it up. i feel like it is more helpful to befriend some actives!!
3. yes&no. some houses have a requirement that the house gets filled. you def get super close with your PC if you live in house, though! the houses have about 35-50 girls in them, so not EVERYONE lives in but there's def group that does. there is def opportunity if you want to, and it is a great time/bonding experience but not 100% necessary. could really go either way, totally depends on what you want.
3. yes & no. some sororities def will and pick out their members before even starting the process. other sororities really don't care.

- people will tell u it’s laidback… that’s somewhat true?
- no! In fact we can’t even check legacy status or accept any letters of recommendation so it is completely irrelevant
- sure sophomore year a lot of girls live in the house, it’s usually not required depending on the chapter. A lot of people also live in satellite houses on DP senior and Junior year
- yup top houses will! All rush processes everywhere do that
