You put in your grades on your application from either high school or you transferred college, grades matter for any year. Everything is more competitive if you're a sophomore+ but each chapter has an allotted amount of bids designed to non-freshman so you're basically competing against other sophomores and juniors.

Sorority rankings and placement for new rushies I would say is 70% looks/20% knowing someone/10% personality. Looks are determining factor, knowing someone assures you a spot if you're pretty, personality matters because you can't be weird and if you are super fun then you can get in a top house.
^Basically the written rubric all sorority girls have in their head during rush.
(Honestly don't think this makes sororities bad, just it's something to keep in mind if you want to rush. From my experience, people in greek life are a lot more social and have way more fun than the rest of the school but obviously that varies by person.)

How do they know your grades at the start of rush though? Like if you're a transfer how will they know what your gpa is if you haven't gone to ucsb
