kappa or theta

They have a kind of random mix of girls but they're mostly outgoing, more big personalities. Many have inflated egos and think they're better than everyone else. They mix with the same frats as theta (phi delt, beta, sig ep). Theta had more mixers last semester but it depends who is in charge of setting them up. from what I've heard from my friends, ppl enjoy theta mixers more than kappas but again it depends on the person. kappa is not close as a sorority but I think they're close in the families but girls in kappa have told me that's somewhat artificial. Ive asked girls in kappa if they knew another girl in kappa and every time they've said "she sounds familiar". They're known to be the "chill" sorority but I think ppl like the older girls more than the new girls. Overall people have mixed feelings about them.

Kappa is more established and more respected sorority out of this two. It's more prestigious as well, if you care to know.
Theta is new and a pledge class can "create" it's reputation and improve it's image. In fact, it will be easier for Theta to become top sorority in a couple of years, since Kappa is kind of stuck with reputation of an upper middle tier.
Top frats will invite girls from IX, Aphi and Phi Mu to their parties but it doesn't mean that you will be banned. Try to ignore rank and give frats that are flying under the radar a closer look. In theory all frats suppose to mix with all sororities.
Top frats guys are not better looking and in their majority are not smarter or more successful than guys who get a lot of "beating" on this site.
Girls are girls. There will be some drama no matter where you go.
Trust your instinct.
If you don't have friends at any of these two sororities, go with Theta, since they are new and will try harder to establish closer sisterhood, while Kappa is more focused on becoming a top sorority right now.
But both sororities are a good choice. Your experience will be what you'll make of it! Reputation can change and in four years any of this sororities can become top ones. But if ranking matters to you, go Kappa. If you are a proactive person, go Theta and you can write it's history.

They're the newest sorority on campus. I would characterize them to be the "girl next door" sorority. You wouldn't expect many to join a sorority but ended up with a good pledge class last year. There are some random girls in this sorority because they're trying to grow in numbers. However, bcus they're the smallest sorority, they are the closest of all the sororities. They put a huge emphasis on sisterhood and philanthropy and they have the biggest presence at other sorority's events. They're rising fast which many people don't like.

Gonna try to address each point as honestly as I can.
Drama:
- Way more drama in Kappa, which is surprising because even 2 years ago it was considered the "chill" sorority. I have very close friends in Kappa (and Theta, for the record) and every week there is some huge drama and cattiness going on. That's not to say Theta DOESN'T have drama (tbh, every single sorority will have drama) but I have just heard way more about Kappa in terms of things going down.
Personalities:
- As someone mentioned above, Kappa is trying really hard to be a "top" sorority (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) but that really compromises the general attitude of the sorority. Lots of nice girls but also a lot of cutthroat and hyper-competitive girls who will have no problem not acknowledging you if they see you as a liability to their sorority. Theta is very new and has very diverse members. It's not like Theta isn't trying to have a larger presence but they do so in a more positive way (campus involvement, philanthropy) and prioritize sisterhood and sorority happiness and closeness before putting others down (members or not) in order to be a "top sorority".
Frats/Mixers: What @Kappa said above. However, while Kappa already has an established reputation, Theta actually had a great pledge class last year that allowed them to have mixers with some of the "higher" frats or athletic teams.

Sisterhood:
See above (Personalities). I would also add that no matter which sorority you end up in, you will most likely have a fam that loves you and will be a great source of support. You will (most likely) find a group of girls you really get along with and can see being your best friends. However, larger sororities inevitably can get cliquey and I know that both Kappa and Theta have smaller groups based on interests or whatever. But, as mentioned above, I have heard from my Kappa friends that their sisterhood feels a little artificial; friends from Theta tell me that although they aren't best friends with every single member, they feel very comfortable around their sisters. Having said this, there will always be drama and girls who dislike each other.
Reputation:
Kappa used to be the chill sorority, somewhere around mid to upper middle tier and although I don't think they have "dropped" in rank, they are just no longer very chill. They do have members that are very involved and present on campus and I think in general, people like them.
Theta is very new and was sort of absent of any reputation until very recently, when they got their new pledge class. As you may know, there was a Theta chapter about five years ago on campus that was completely different to this one (which turned into IX) and a lot of people were comparing the new Theta unfavorably to the old Theta in the beginning. They are quickly rising and I believe they have a lot of potential, but we'll see.

The sorority you'll like more really depends on you, and what you want from your greek life experience at hopkins. The girls I know in theta are really into greek life and are super into theta and do everything together. They all work hard to build theta's reputation, which is why they attend more mixers and greek events around campus--it's basically required for them to go to things since their reputation's still pretty fragile.They're super friendly and outgoing. The girls in kappa are generally high achieving and busy with academics, other clubs and volunteering, research etc, so they don't devote as much time to kappa in general. They're also closer with the rest of the panhellenic community (again, this could be because theta is newer). Kappa sisterhood isn't bad--kappa girls do come together often for things like date parties, recruitment, and chapter, and families hang out all the time. But, it's definitely not as good as theta's. Again, kappa is a lot bigger than theta, and it's hard to be close with over 150 girls. I think the description for the "chill" sorority for kappa still holds, but some girls definitely are social climbers. Theta is the "high energy" sorority. If you're looking to be super involved with greek life, Theta is for you. If you rushed to meet people and make friends but can't devote a majority of your time to greek life, kappa is for you.

To conclude, the most important piece of advice that a lot of my friends ignored when they rushed was to choose the sorority that you feel the most comfortable and at ease with. Tiers, ranks, reputation, mixers, all of that can change in a year or two. The most important thing is that you are surrounded by girls who love and support you. I am in a "top sorority" and a few of my friends dropped a year or two ago because they were miserable and felt very uncomfortable in our sorority. Once you graduate, the only thing you will have are memories and perhaps, lifetime friends from your sorority. The Hopkins rep will NOT matter - I encourage you to also look up Theta and Kappa on a national level, as they are both very well-established and have huge networks and work with different philanthropies. The fact that theta is new is not really in their favor tbh. They are still new and smaller so they have to be less selective in order to get enough girls. That's why you see a kind of random mix of girls in the chapter - some fun/cute/outgoing girls, some really strange ones, and everything in between. My friends in theta have told me that it affects their sisterhood in that there are more cliques among similar girls who don't really feel sisterhood with the others. Basically Kappa is a more cohesive unit because they are well-established and can be selective in who they take as opposed to constantly recruiting and offering bids to anyone who meets the minimum requirements. That is why if you look at founding dates, sororities are basically ranked in terms of how old they are on this campus. The newer ones are usually on the bottom for many years because of this dynamic. Just trying to give some perspective.

Theta is definitely on the rise, and their pledge class last year was good. They have gotten really involved in the few short years they have been on campus. However, they are not nearly on the same level as Kappa. Kappa has a built reputation that Theta is still trying to established. I doubt most PNMs will pick Theta over Kappa.

Where is all this theta "cute pledge class" etc coming from? These are the facts: Theta is new. Theta did nott get a great pledge class. It's still at the bottom because no one really knows what to make of them. And in terms of being on the rise, that's doubtful (although possible in years?) because of the aphi/phi mu dictatorship.
