whats the point of covered grades

by:

This semester was tough, especially with Calc III and Orgo and now my GPA is a 2.4. Is there absolutely no way I can still rush as a freshman? What's the point of covered grades if they're uncovered? I'm pretty bitter about this, especially since I really did try but transitioning to college was hard and I focused more on clubs and extracurriculars over my classes. I obviously won't have such a low GPA with uncovered grades, why doesn't the Greek office realize this? Do all of the sororities have informal fall rush? (Like Kappa, APhi, Phi Mu etc) And is it harder to get a bid at a top sorority as a sophomore?

I don't know what the gpa requirement is, but I wouldn't give up hope yet. Alpha Phi, Phi Mu and Kappa do not typically have informal rush, as they tend to meet quota and do not have additional spots. If you were to go through formal recruitment as a sophomore it is a little tougher. Sororities are concerned that new member sophomores won't be as involved and will take away a spot from a freshman who's really dedicated to being an active member. However, as long as you can display that you want to be a strong presence in the organization you shouldn't have a problem!

Last i heard, sororities do double check to make sure your gpa is above a 2.5 and not on academic pro. But that doesn't mean you can't rush next year if you bring your grades up!

The point of covered grades is for med school applications and jobs and such. Not for something as silly as sororities. Because believe it or not, there's more to life than being in a top sorority so you can hook up with the hottest boys on campus!!! Hard to believe ikr

Unless you're dream job is homemaker, in which case, yea what's the point of covered grades? In fact, what's the point of coming to JHU and having your parents shell out so much money? Could probably get into a better sorority in a state school anyways...

I heard that this year, fraternity and sorority life will be uncovering freshman fall grades for sorority recruitment. Most, if not all, of the sororities have high scholarship as a core value and a 2.5 is not an outrageous minimum requirement-- that's a C+ average. If you're not getting above that it's gonna be hard for you to keep up with school and greek life. The GPA requirement is not to make people feel bad, it's to insure the organizations recruit members that will be able to be involved.

I think you're allowed to go through recruitment but most chapters have an automatic system wherein you will be automatically dropped after a round or two due to low academics. The good news is that there is always next year (rather through COB or formal rush in a year) Take this time to develop new friends outside of greek life and be that GDI your friends bring to date parties and get a real sample of all the sororities on campus
