clarity needed
by: QuestionI was hoping to join a sorority next semester, but I was looking on the fraternity and sorority life and it says that a gap of 2.5 is needed. I took a heavy course load that I couldn't manage, and I don't know if I will make the requirement. I guess my question is how strict is that 2.5 gpa requirement? If there is no chance for me to rush, is my only option to wait for sophomore year? If so, is there a fall rush for sophomores?

There is the option to go through informal recruitment in the fall for the sororities that don't reach the quota of new members. If you really want to be in a sorority, I definitely recommend it! However, the GPA requirement is more to say that you shouldn't take on more than you can handle, and the school just wants to make sure that Greek life doesn't take away from academics. You being a freshman though makes me think that you may be being too hard on yourself! Many classes are curved and if you study hard for your finals/papers, you should definitely make s 2.5 :) Good luck! And I hope to see you during recruitment!

also keep in mind that Greek Life at Hopkins has changed a lot because of all the frat scandals. Frats are limiting their social interactions with everyone except people they know really well and it is safe to say that sorority's ranking doesn't matter as much as it used to. Don't set your mind on top sororities and you'll be fine. Benefits of being in top sororities are overrated, trust me!

They told us last year during recruitment that the requirement was a 2.5 when in reality it is a 2.0. Whatever the true limit is, it isss set in stone unfortunately. If you believe your best fit is in one of the sororities that offers continuous opening bidding in the fall (this year it was theta and pi phi but that could change next year!) then by all means go through informal recruitment in the fall, but otherwise just wait until next spring and go through formal recruitment! I know plenty of girls who rushed as sophomores because they struggled academically as freshmen, it's not at all uncommon. It honestly will make you more secure in your choice of organization. As long as you show organizations that you really want to actively participate and take on leadership roles it shouldn't put you at any kind of disadvantage.

Whatever GPA is set by the Greek life office is set in stone. Most sororities consider you an "academic risk" if your GPA is below whatever their national minimum is (some higher than others. All around 2.0-2.5) they will drop you from recruitment. But with covered grades, GPA becomes an interesting issue that can't really be considered unless you're on probation. But if you are a "risk" you will get dropped. In informal recruitment or formal recruitment.

Are you saying that the 2.5 gpa limit isn't set in stone?
