dropping my sorority

by: sophomore

Hey guys, like many girls at Hop I did not come here with the intention of rushing. However, last year I decided to support my friends and rush with them. A few distinct sororities really sold me on their sisterhood and philanthropy and I decided I wanted to continue rushing in hopes of getting into an (unnamed) sorority.

Well I got my wish, and I have now been a sister for a few months now. The first few weeks were so exciting, having all the sisterhood events and meeting all of my sisters. Secret week was unforgettable and I had no regrets about pledging, despite the HUGE commitment it would be and the fact that I would have to pay dues.

Now that I am a sophomore, I am questioning whether I should drop. Nothing terrible has happened to me, but now that things have settled, I realize a lot of our "selling points" were largely exaggerated to get us to rush. I do not feel a unified sisterhood with my sisterhood, and there is a LOT of talking behind each other's backs and drama, not to mention some other upsetting things. Some older sisters won't even say hi to me on campus, even when I am wearing my letters and we have met before. Our exec board, while very competent, is quite intimidating and I am scared to go to them about any concerns. Same with panhel.

This is not why I joined a sorority, and I am wondering, does it ever get better? Is it just my sorority that has these problems? Would appreciate it if I could get some advice, as I am seriously considering dropping.

I am a sophomore so I rushed last spring. For me, i felt intimidated at first and got comfortable within the first few weeks. I say hi to girls who I've never actually talked to before cus we recognize each other even without letters. If you're questioning it this much tho I would drop just because it is a huge time commitment and a lot of money

One of the basic human needs is a need to belong to a group. I don't like how my sorority is disjointed and I don't like how our board operates( it seems that they enjoy power and that they are doing it for resume only) but I wouldn't drop because there are plenty of occasions when being in a sorority is better than being a non affiliated loner in a school where people are generally too focused on themselves.
