sororitys and frats
by: hm
Hey guys, this is a serious post (for once) that hopefully isn't meant to hurt anyone. I am a rising junior and I am in a sorority that is involved pretty heavily on campus. I don't regret joining it, I love my family, and I have made lots of great friends, but sometimes I feel like a lot of our sisterhood is forced and there are a few girls that I don't even know very well and even a few that I don't feel comfortable hanging out with. There is a bit of cliqueness and a sense of inner ranks and I am honestly put off by it. I have talked earnestly to my friends in other sororities and they too have echoed my sentiments. Maybe it is because there are way more girls in a sorority than there are guys in a fraternity.. who knows.
I was curious, are frats like this too? If you are a frat brother, do you feel like you can talk to any of your brothers with complete ease? Or do you sometimes feel uncomfortable or unfamiliar with a few of them?

Im a guy in a too frat that some people consider cliquey. I kinda see that in terms of their being clear friend groups, but everyone really is comfortable with each other both as individuals and especially when we all get together. I'd be fine hanging out with any guy in my frat

I am from a popular sorority and I am comfortable around most of my sisters, however, I don't feel any support from them, and none of them will be my bridesmaids. That's a common situation. Sororiries are too large. Besides, (at most sororities) recruiting is not a very democratic process. Choosing one's little can be competitive and as a result many "families" end up with forced, random affiliations. I also think that majority of board members are there for the resume only. I don't feel like our boartd does enough to develop closer relationship in a sorority. So girls, be careful who you vote for. It's not a GPA or campus involvement that matters for a president, but her ability to create a unique spirit in a sorority, "cement" some friendship and bring sisters together, even if it means penality for those who are staying only with their clique.
