Years ago IX was the Theta chapter. But Theta National took away their charter for partying during a probation period. The chapter members formed the private social organization, IX, and was not recognized by JHU. After five years, Theta was allowed to recharter, and is the current Theta chapter today. Two years ago, IX received recognition from JHU as a recognized social organization, but the organization is not a Panhellenic member, thus does not participate in formal recruitment.

Approximately 12-15 years ago, KAT was #1 on campus but they had a party while on probation and their national shut the chapter down. The members in the chapter created the non-affiliated, private social club, IX, that for many years retained a #1ish standing and attitude. This group is considered an independent social club that was not recognized by JHU until a couple of years ago. IX is still fairly popular, and benefits from the fact that their club is not a member of, and not subject to the rules of, NPC (The National Panhellenic Conference). NPC members are original 26 sororities and NPC’s rules govern PM, Aphi, Pi Phi, KKG, & KAT sororities (to a degree) on campus and their recruitment.
Meanwhile, KAT re-established a new chapter 5 years after closing the first chapter (after all previous members graduated).
