sophomore options

by:

hey so I decided to drop out of rush for a few different reasons but after seeing my friends who are members have so much fun in their sororities, I think I am interested in joining again. I was wondering what the real options are for a sophomore (especially one who has gone through a couple rounds of recruitment before)? Which sororities will do COB in the fall? Would it be worth it to wait for the spring to be able to have every sorority as an option? Which sororities are honestly going to consider taking a sophomore?

Hey there! So any of the five sororities accept sophomores (even APhi and Phi Mu). As a sophomore, it really helps if you already know a few girls in each sorority so that way they can put in a good word for you during voting or even before rush. If you really want to join in the fall, then COB is a great option. Unfortunately total has not been announced yet so we don’t know who is doing COB for sure yet. Usually Pi Phi and either Theta or Kappa will do COB. Hope this helps and hope you decide to go Greek!

All sororities will want you as a sophomore unless you have poor grades. Showing you can handle the pressures of JHU and make good grades makes you a great candidate for recruitment.

Tl;dr I'd say if you're interested and have a lot of friends in sororities, reach out to them! This is Hopkins; every sorority will consider you (if they can) in the Spring!

Find out whether or not you can still be accepted into a sorority if you go through rush or COB! It is an open secret that some sororities will not (or cannot due to national policies) accept you if you dropped after a certain point during formal recruitment. Also some chapters have GPA requirements. Low key ask your friends if you can even join their sorority so you aren’t blindsided by a rejection. Like the others said, whichever sorority has less than the campus total number of girls (sisters graduate early/go abroad/etc.) will participate in COB.

Pros and Cons to COB:
Pro:
• It’s easier than going through formal recruitment as a Sophomore
• More certainty because you can approach a specific sorority & don’t have to #trusttheprocess
• One extra semester of date parties/sisterhood/fun and more time to get to know everyone before you graduate!!
• The option of getting a little even sooner!! (You can get a little who is a freshman as a sophomore!)
• Less stressful/time consuming than formal recruitment
Cons:
• Smaller pledge class (although this can lead to super tight pledge classes so may be a secret pro!)
• Even though all sororities (even A Phi and Phi Mu) may pick up a girl or two as a COB, it is up to the sorority whether they have open events that everyone can attend (which is more similar to the openness of formal recruitment) or if they offer bids more quietly (which is more common).
• The sorority you are in love with/have friends in may decide to not to have COB (ask them!)
• If you are rejected you definitively know it was that sorority rather than some computer program
• It’s missing the fun parts of recruitment!!
• One extra semester of dues
