dropping

by:

I heard that it’s really hard to find a group to belong to at Hopkins if you’re not in Greek life or an athlete. I joined a sorority and so far I really don’t like it. How lonely will I be if I’m neither an athlete nor a sister in a sorority.

you'll be fine! it's hopkins, there are lots of other student groups you can join. I would even argue that I've built some of my stronger friendships from non-sorority things, though I definitely do feel my social circle has gotten bigger thanks to my sorority. It's normal to have friends who aren't affiliated or in different greek organizations and no one will think less of you for dropping!

also i know you said you havent liked it so far, but I'd give it like another week/ weekend to see if you really start to bond with any girls in your chapter! but if you drop, there is still plenty of ways to find a community on campus ( just greek life and athletics are the most obvious ones) so dont sweat it!

You have plenty of time. You will be fine. After sophomore year when everyone become so an upperclassman and nobody lives in the dorms or hangs out in the library anymore that’s when things get bad. If you’re a freshman tho you still got plenty of time to find some group to belong to.

Going off of that what are some alternatives to going Greek or being an athlete if we want to avoid the dreaded lonely upperclassmen status. I tried to join clubs first semester. But it feels like the majority of people in it do the minimum possible to put it on their resume and end up showing up to like 1 event rather than being open to tight friend groups.

You could try a professional frat.

Try to join some creative, artsy group, if you can, like dance, theater or an a- cappella groups. They, usually, form pretty tight bonds! Or keep an eye on political or other clubs, like model UN or something like that. You can find an alternative. Don’t quit your sorority! It is better to belong to a group, even if they don’t act like sisters. It is not that unusual. See if you can join some sorority committee or get an official responsibility/ position within your sorority —it might help.
