what about the other sororities?

by:

I know that realistically I might not get into phi mu or alpha phi so what is there to know about the other sororities? Theta? Kappa?

just be yourself in every room, try not to try to be someone other than who you are, and you'll end up in a sorority that will be a good fit for you. i have friends in all of the different sororities and some of my best conversations were with girls in sororities i hadn't really considered prior to rush. it'll all work out tho

Keep in mind that with a very few active frats left, rank is not as important as it used to be 2-3 years ago. Guys in top frats are Ok but not better than anywhere else. Sororities recruit "mixed bags " so even Aphi has all kinds of girls. Only a basic side kick would think less of you if you'll end up in a so - called buttom level sorority. Remember you are a Hopkins' girl. This is already a testimony to your exceptional traits. As for guys, I've seen that sometimes lower ranked frats have more attractive and less f@cked up guys than the top two.

Theta and Kappa are excellent sororities. Theta has some absolutely beautiful girls, like the other two. I don't think I've ever met a Theta that hasn't loved Theta. Like seriously loved it. Kappa is very well liked by the active frats on campus including the "top" frats. A lot of them party hard and they are known as the "cool" sorority. I'm under the impression that these two sororities preferenced a lot of the same girls last year and that they each had very few girls drop, so a lot of people really seem to like them during recruitment, too. Enough to actually want them and rank them higher than phi mu or a phi

Joining a sorority doesn't change what people think of you. I have friends all across pan hell. A phis and phi mus aren't exclusively friends with each other. Thetas and Kappas aren't friends only with themselves. When you rush with your friends, some of you will end up in phi mu, some in theta, some in pi phi even. That's the way it is, it doesn't mean that you will stop being friends with people in other sororities. If anything, you will make more friends across Greek life than ever. Sometimes sororities even have sisterhood events with other sororities (I think Alpha Phi and Theta have done this before). Anyways, sororities are supposed to pick girls that they think will represent their national ideals the best. Contrary to what this site may try to have you believe, looks and how many boys like you has little to no impact as to which sorority you will end up in. This is Hopkins after all, you should think the women here are more thoughtful than shallow. If you're honest with yourself when picking a sorority, you will end up in the right place and you won't have to sacrifice your "reputation" or friendships at all.

Agreed! A;so this is Hopkins you guys, stop taking this so seriously. There's no "you can only talk/hang out with your sisters or boys from X frat" because then you'll just be talking with the same 80 people all through your Hopkins life. I'm a junior and no one even cares about whether someone's in APhi or Kappa or whatever - it seems like a big deal when you rush/when you get your bid but in a year or two, it really won't matter.

Just go into it with a really open mind and don't force yourself to like a sorority just because it's "top" if deep down, you know it's not right for you. I have friends in all sororities (and GDIs) and they all love it because they went into recruitment and had a sincere conversation with all the girls. I also know girls who "stuck it out" with top sororities because they thought they would eventually like it but they were miserable and felt like they were walking on eggshells the entire time. I also know a girl who got a bid from a lower ranked sorority and she was initially upset but realized that NONE OF IT MATTERS, went through it with an open mind (because she had genuinely enjoyed the conversations she had during recruitment) and she is now an officer for her sorority. She loves it!

I totally agree with all the replies on this post so far. I wish people would stop looking at it with the "Oh, I didn't get into 1 of the top 2 sororities, I guess I'll consider the less popular ones now..." mindset. That's not the point of joining a sorority, and if you have that mindset during rush you could easily join a sorority for its reputation but not actually enjoy it. Kappa and Theta are great organizations with some really awesome girls. Both sororities have strong sisterhoods and fun social events/mixers with top fraternities. Even a lot of Pi Phis end up loving their sorority experience. The key to enjoying your sorority and getting the most out of your experience is letting go of reputations/rank and just enjoy the friendships you'll make in the sorority you matched with during rush. Besides, rank/reputations really do stop mattering once you're a junior.
