reality check
by: WowOkay so let me just start with saying that I'm not in Greek life, but my little sister is in a sorority at FIU. Today was her birthday. Do you know how many of her sisters wished her a happy birthday, even just a text? One. One sister. All of her close non affiliated friends wished her happy birthday, and even a few other friends that she hadn't heard from in awhile. My sis ended up going out with them and her boyfriend, but she was really bummed out when none (with the exception of the one) of her sisters even gave her the time of day. Mind you, she's been a sister for over a year now and has struggled with really getting the feel of Greek life. She has beat herself up over it and feels like she's not wanted in her "sisterhood." But what happened today really says something about Greek life and how real the friendships are.

You get what you put out. That's what I learned. You cannot gain friendships by just joining. You'll get connections FOR SURE but you need to be a friend. I struggled myself wth it because I was not being a friend. I'd do what I had to do and go home. I built nothing. What has she done for her sisters? Has she said happy birthday to them? Has she planned something for someone's birthday? I can't begin to explain how problematic this post is. It's like going to school and you're always with the same people in the same classes everyday for a year and still having no friends.

The logic is so flawed in this post I cringe. Its like saying, "I go to class every day so I should have good grades." You get what you put in. That's what I tell my pledges every pledge class. No one is entitled because of the letters on their chest. I don't know you're little sister but regardless of the sorority she is in, I promise if she actually worked on building her relationships with the other girls, her phone would have been flooded with messages. THAT orrrr she's just a lame and no one likes her in the sorority. But I would go with the former as opposed to the latter. Good luck!
