Spring Sing Judging
by: Weather PledgeThis year, steering told us to not mention our chapter in our synopsis. I truly think that had a huge impact on the standings. I feel like 3D/BYX & AOII/AGR would not have placed if they named their chapter. Past judges have been notoriously biased. I love the change steering! What are your thoughts?

I think that writing up tri deltas placing as a result of undoing some bias is neglecting the hard work of their directors to actually put on a good show. AOPi AGR taking second is a fluke imo - I wasn’t ever that impressed by it and I think KD/Fiji definitely put on a better show - but there was something the judges liked I guess. If you look at the other houses besides AOPi AGR that made it to the top: Chi O, Beta, Theta, Snu, Tri Delt, Fiji and KD… none of these are houses that anyone is surprised to see doing well in shows.

Honestly the bias I see is steering awards. Houses that steering sees as doing too well get ignored by steering when it comes to awards and the hard work of their directors is overlooked.
Steering awards should be awarded regardless of what the judges awards are perceived to be.

i don't think anyone questions their effort when it comes to directing. What people question is why some shows that were actual garbage get steering awards over casts that deserve multiple awards. This comment isn't about spring sing this year specifically, just a general statement that steering awards are kinda whack. Anyone who knows anything about shows knows that steering is political

for real tho. Lol steering acts like their job is so hard and like they're the saviors of shows. I could sit in an air conditioned room and tell people to fix their vowels too if i wanted

Steering doesn’t just choose based on performance night they also consider how casts interacted with them and with each other throughout the whole process, if steering had a better time with certain houses they would be more likely to get nominated for awards.

If you’ve served on steering before, you’d know you get to see all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes for every single show that others don’t get to see. They do not take into account who they think will do well with judged awards because as we saw this year- anything can happen. Putting on a show takes a lot of hard work, so be happy for the people who got awards and don’t let steering awards dictate how you feel about your own effort.
