Mental health awareness

by:

As a mentally ill person in greek life, I literally can’t stop thinking about how uncomfortable the little mental health ✨this or that✨ and ❤️fill in the blank🥺 stories from half the sororities made me on Monday. Like what did that do? Compare mental illness to needing more bubble baths? If you wanna talk about suicide prevention maybe put it into Greek 100 or chapter specific programs, not INSTAGRAM STORIES. I’m sure y’all thought it was cute but this is never gonna be something that is appropriate to make into an instagram challenge. People are actually suffering idc if your social media chair needed an engagement boost

Does your chapter not do mental health programming? I just assumed every chapter had it... I’m really sorry if they don’t :(

I totally see where you are coming from and hope that my reply did not seem all against yours. i agree that i hope this is only the opening of the conversation and that the indivual chapters take matters into their hands with their members. i truly hope that there are not any chpaters who were just doing this to look good in the public eye. sending love and hoping you have a restful winter breal after this hectic semester (:

I liked that my sorority did that. I did not participate, because I like keeping that stuff personal. And my struggles are several right now. But I applaud anyone in my chapter (and others, but I didn’t see any others) that spoke out. We need to normalize mental illness so people aren’t afraid to get help. We can not compare mental illnesses and be like “oh you are only stressed about school? :( poor thing, I actually have depression” because everyone has their own battles. It’s not a competition. Sorry if your felt uncomfortable, but the greek life community is working together towards greater mental health one step at a time.

But like, what about those stories displayed a substantial effort from the chapters to improve their discussions about mental health beyond instagram? Did they provide good resources? Maybe something from their nationals? Some did like I loved KD’s stuff. It’s not fair to compare mental health struggles to one another but it’s also not fair to compare mental health struggles to just needing to put on a face mask. That feels like a slap in the face to somebody who has sat in their room considering suicide, on a day where the PURPOSE is to discuss suicide prevention

I totally agree. I didn’t see any posts from other chapters so maybe I didn’t see what you’re talking about. I can see that some would equate mental health help with “self care” Self care does help on days where I’m struggling a lot, but it’s just a temporary solution. I totally see where you’re coming from now!

As someone who is mentally ill and has had a suicide attempt, I participated in a story describing what I struggle with. That was the first time I had said anything about my illness on my instagram, because no one knew. And that’s the problem. Yes it’s personal information but you didn’t have to share it if you didn’t want to. The whole idea was to break the stigma and I think it did just that. It sparked fruitful conversation in our chapter and I had so many people reach out to me about it. It was liberating, and I was proud of my journey and how far i’ve come. Just because you didn’t like it, doesn’t mean it didn’t help others. Don’t discourage people from telling their stories.
