grades

If I have a so-so GPA because of certain circumstances, should I explain the reason for some bad grades to the houses?

ALSO, I was still involved in a ton of extracurriculars, held leadership positions, still did community service, etc.

Sorry to be blunt, but It won't matter if there's a reason, a lot of houses will be required to cut you. There's no point. If it's that big of a deal then you can always do COB or rush next year after you get your grades up

Sororities have minimum GPAs they HAVE to cut girls at. If a PNM doesn't make the GPA requirement in order for her to be carried on to the next round – VP recruitment has to get nationals permission and explain to their advisor why a grade risk is an asset to the chapter. And the first round is grade cuts- so that's a lot of work for a girl that may not even pledge or fit well in your house.

My advice to you would be to try recruitment and see how it goes – if you get completely released because of your grades then work really hard your first year and get your grades up!

Goodluck girl!! I do hope you find your home!

If it's a really compelling story, have your rec writers address it. "She was diagnosed with cancer her junior year and was on chemo for the next year. Her grades suffered but her determination and drive were strengthened by this trial." If not, it's probably the kind of thing that other girls worked through while still maintaining their grades. If you wait a year, meet lots of girls in sororities, and have stellar grades you'll be a little more attractive, but recruitment as a sophomore has its challenges too.

I would include a letter with your resume that you give your alumnae who have offered to write recommendations. They may or may not decide to include the information in their Rec. It is really out of your hands, at that point. Just remember, you don't have to accept a bid from a house you don't fit with. You can rush and see how it works, then focus on grades this year and rush again in the fall. Or do COB after Rush is over.

Remember that you won't know if you fit in until you give it a try. I think the comment above is stupid because if a house sees you as fitting in, you probably DO fit in even if you don't see it yet yourself. When people say they couldn't seem themselves fitting in, it usually means they think they were dropped by mistake from all the higher ranked houses where they REALLY belonged. Smh.

also, what I was trying to say is that IF the op was only interested in a top tier house who might cut her BC of grades, then she could continue the rush process and see where it leads. If at the end, she really is set on a certain house, then she could rush next year. The recruitment process works! I encourage girls to be open to ALL houses because in the end they will end up where they need to be, even if that means no bid.

The "even if it means no bid" thing bothers me. A girl visiting a house for such a short time doesn't know if she'll fit in. If she thinks she won't it's most likely because she thinks she deserves something more prestigious. The houses can look at a girl's transcript, application, recs, etc. and have a pretty good idea if she'll fit in. Then they can visit with her and make sure. The girl herself can only look at her first impressions and then for the rest rely on gossip. I think that's harmful. If a girl goes through recruitment and gets a bid, she definitely can fit into the house. With over 200 girls in the house, she can find a squad. But if you poison her mind about accepting certain houses because she's only interested in top tier, you've done her a real wrong.

Not to contradict you, but me and most of my sisters can tell right away what house a girl is going to be in, regardless of how much we like them or may want them in ours. During rush and GDD there were girls I loved but I knew wouldn't be a good fit for my house. As hard as it is to believe, one conversation can show a lot more than you'd think. There are obviously some girls that I talked to that I can see in one of two houses, but once you're in the Greek system for a while you know the personality types almost automatically. It's honestly super easy to tell, which also brings my advice to pnms: don't take it personally if you get cut from a house that you loved/ had a strong connection with. It happened to me, and it happened to friends of mine, and almost every single girl who has gone through recruitment. The girls will cut you if they think you'd be a better fit in another house, and that's not as in saying "oh she's not pretty enough or smart enough or involved enough," they do it because even if they love you, they want you to be in the house that's best for you.

Ah, I didnt mean to mislead the PNM. Her question was about her grades. I think a PNM has to go into rush knowing that she will be ranking the houses each day based on who she "likes" and the houses will be inviting based on who they feel "fits" their house. OSU has a huge Greek system and because of that, it is more competitive. But, If you go into rush with an open mind, open to the process, and most importantly not have your heart set on the top houses, you will e fine!

Just because a girl likes a house, they might not think she fits even if she brings her grades up and goes through recruitment the next year. That's the reason that it's important not to drop out if you are disappointed by getting cut by a house you love. It's just not meant to be. Ever.

I had a 3.3 and got cut the first day from all the top houses. I love the house I ended up with but you should expect that you won't get a top house and be prepared.

The whole idea of the "top tier houses" bothers me. Don't get me wrong, I like all of the houses at OSU and they each have something unique about them. PNM's, of course you want to join the "best" house, but if it doesn't work out that way, you will end up where you need to. It will be such a great experience to be a part of a pledge class in any house. This is my last year at OSU, and one thing I have learned is that every house has so much to offer...great women and lasting friendships!

Cut from all top tier houses and have over a 3.3. Still met some wonderful girls in a sorority considered a bottom tier - which is a term that stinks. I wish it didn't even exist because it's all about connecting with like-minded ladies.

In all honesty, don't bother even going to the top houses, especially Chi O, the first day unless you are just curious to see inside the houses. . They all do immediate grade drops. Well, unless you are a legacy, then you get one more chance. People will tell you it's not the truth, but it is.

If you miss any parties you're automatically cut from recruitment and can't continue participating... Are you stupid?

"in all honesty" is hilarious. Nothing could be further from the truth. You HAVE TO GO to all the parties. Period. Everything you're invited to or you'll be dropped from recruitment. smh

Mid tier houses are the most fun for the girls in those houses because that's the only house they're in, stupid. Whichever house you're in is the most fun for you. Seems like a hard concept unless you're able to think critically.

Really, what are houses wanting? Know so many quality girls, with high GPAs, community service because they like to, not because it looks good, honest, beautiful who were cut. Not girls who booze it up or want to be in sorority to meet dudes. Girls who are interested in sisterhood.
