grade cuts for rush

by:

I am confused about what GPA you will need to have to not be cut from the majority of houses. I have read that some people say the actual cut is much higher than what is listed. what would be an ideal minimum GPA to have for rush? Also do they factor in SAT/volunteer hrs etc that would be on our resume?

Chi O says that that cut off of a 3.2 gpa (most houses cut off of core gpa btw- if you're worried about it, call OSU and ask for your core gpa and they can get it off of your HS transcript) but they cut much higher than that. For the most part, every other house stays true to what they have in the workbook. That's just basically their minimum. Some houses do act/sat grade saves, but it varies from house to house. Look at the Osu Greek life website or look in your workbook, it shows the minimum gpa you need to not get cut by each house!
Volunteer hours may make a difference for some houses, but for my house it doesn't. My house (and a lot of others) are strict about the grade cut, and we automatically have to cut anyone who is below it, no matter how much we may like them.

I can't speak for any other house but I know in my house we have a public minimum and we can't take a girl with grades below that. But we also have another private minimum. Unless we REALLY want a girl, if she has grades below that she's cut. That's not to be mean, but we really care about grades and realize that if you don't have excellent grades out of high school, by the the time you get involved with campus activities you probably won't do well. But don't worry about it. Your grades are what they are and all you can do is go through and make the best impression you can at each house.

Is there a big jump between the private and public GPA minimums? Like the public one is 3.0 but the private is like 3.6?

I'm in a different house than the girl who posted that comment, but for my house, if we do end up taking grade cuts then we won't take anything under a 3.0 core. And even then, it's very rare. As in like her sister or lifelong best friend is a current member of the house, otherwise we don't.

What do you mean by "public GPA " vs "private GPA"?

PNMs coming through recruitment don't realize this but the average, yes AVERAGE GPA is something like 3.7 most years. So a girl with lower grades doesn't have a chance in the top houses. Houses that select for academics will probably automatically cut her. Lower houses will take girls with lower grades so do not DO NOT get bent out of shape if you get cut from some houses. All our houses are good, so don't drop out of recruitment. We're all friends and we all enjoy working together.

Why do they even bother as putting the minimums at 3.0-3.2 in the book then? That makes no sense to me.

It's grade inflation. When my mom was in high school a 3.4 was really high. Now a 4.2 weighted is really high. Sororities pick the girls they want. Get used to it. It doesn't have to make sense to you. ha ha ha ha ha!

Btw totally agreed with the comment above^
But most of the til houses feel like if you can't make above a 3.2 in high school which is super easy compared to college, then how are you supposed to make grade requirements in college?
But no, it doesn't have to make sense to you, and it won't make sense to you until you're in a sorority and starting the recruitment process. :-)

What at "just a note" poster said is so true!!! Grades are also an easy way to make cuts quickly. Sometimes it sucks letting girls go you already bond with first round but we have to go from 900 girls down to whatever quota is and grades are an easy way to get there in the first few days. If you're a freshman in high school or know of one who's even thinking about going thru recruitment one day, keep your grades high, get involved, be the all around girl because that's what most houses are looking for and there's a lot of girls like that to go around to each house. It makes it really competitive. Just don't drop out of you get cut for grades. Every house at OSU has something to offer with great, beautiful girls in every house. Keep an open mind!

Hard to be a freshman with a college GPA. Just your concurrent enrollment isn't enough. They'll want to see your HS grades too. But if you have two solid semesters of college, use that (with a transcript.)
