wvu seeks culture change in greek life.

by: The Greek

West Virginia University administrators are cracking down on the school’s party scene after two fraternities closed and another was temporarily suspended.WVU President Gordon Gee wrote a letter to students Friday proposing a major culture change and remembering Nolan Burch, a freshman who died Nov. 14 after an incident at the Kappa Sigma fraternity house.“I am an optimist, and despite the series of events surrounding our students that we have experienced this fall, I am optimistic that this institution — and our students — will rise to the call and address the issues at hand,” Gee wrote. “. . . A culture is not dictated by your past but can be positively transformed by your present. And that is what our university is all about: translating ideas into actions that make a difference in our lives. And it is in those actions that WVU will rise to a better calling — a higher calling.” - See more at........www.wvgazette.com/article/20141121/GZ01/141129774/ 1101#sthash.3q2E1AOr.dpuf

Yep.....I saw did one coming by the administration. In honesty, maybe this is good for the best because our Greek Life was getting out of control. This change in culture is probably what we as Greeks need to ensure our survival on campus.

Yes they are. Registered parties with GLO, WVU Admin. and Campus Security with alcohol. For those parties with alcohol, students 21 and up will be given a wrist bands and those under 21 with not. The party scene at WVU will DIE!!!!

This is happening already at some schools. Might as well drink in your dorm room now.

Greek Life has been transforming for years. The loss of Phi Psi, the end of Sunnyside, and the Student Conduct office creating a new "Greek Social Policy" at the beginning of this Fall semester certainly set a precedent. Now that the University has been given fuel by the mistakes of a few Fraternities, we will see this progression shift even faster. We can see a changing from the "Old Guard" Fraternities to a "New Guard." Fraternities such as SAE, Sigma Nu, SAMMY and DTD will more the likely lead this new upcoming front. I don't think it's a negative action, but more or less necessary to keep Greek Life currently on campus and sustainable. There will still be parties and the rowdy culture of WVU will subsist. There will just be more organization and policies to jump through. The Fraternities that will be too disorganized or lazy will simply be left behind by the those that take the current conditions and mold them to their benefit.

I also think this can create a larger pool of students who will RUSH because it will better meet their standards. I honestly think Greek Life should open up to a much larger non-Greek population as well. It's funny to see a such a monetary shuffle for Philanthropy assets, only between Greeks when they're only 10% of the campus population. The organizations that open themselves up to the 90% will see more equity with charitable donations and make a more prosperous future for the Morgantown region. Most seem clueless that by only hosting events within the Greek system are simply moving assets to one another instead of creating wealth.
