I'm a freshman now and I think I've decided I want to rush Alpha Xi from the group of girls that I've met, and they seem like very genuine girls. Should I go for it?

Yes if they seem like a group of girls you belong with. They've really improved from drama in the past. Do keep other sororities in mind as well when going through rush week. Alpha xi delta has a lot of New Jersey girls(neutral statement).

They are actually getting more out there now and not just because they did informal rush for all nonfreshman. They aren't irrevelevant currently.
