new sorority??

by:

Any word on which sorority will be coming to campus? Phi sig came in 2013 so it looks like there will be a new one fall of 2015 or spring of 16

it will happen when it happens. first of all, whoever wants to come to campus needs to come present a big presentation to the university. then they have to pick which one they want to come on, then all the sororities at UD need to vote to bring that chapter to campus. so slow your roll.

Heard it was tri delta

there is no way of knowing which one it will be, all of the NPC sororities that don't have chapters here and don't have disciplinary status (Kappa Delta, AXO etc) are welcome to try and start a chapter here. Like a previous comment said, they have to make huge presentations and people have to vote, it's not a simple process. so yeah, it could potentially be Tri Delt but there's no actual way of knowing until they're at least down to a final 2 or 3. Any names thrown out at this point are rumors and not true.

Kappa Delta did present here when Gamma Phi was selected.

I hope it's a stacked extension. I love Phi Mu but am happy to see the growth whichever groups are picked.

I actually think that would be really awful. I don't think new sororities should be added to the community until every chapter is strong, so strong that it can't handle the amount of girls it gets. There are still some lower tiers struggling. If you bring in a new group it just pushes down good chapters that we already have.

Also DG and Theta were a stacked extension and that backfired big time. Both houses struggled and were never able to rise like Gamma Phi or ADPi.

Theta is doing fine. Also, this school needs new sororities. Some of the sororities have now gotten to almost 300 girls. Which is ridiculous...

So let them struggle. Survival of the fittest. Just because they couldn't manage to improve and find a place for themselves in the same way that GPhi or more recently (but to a lesser extent) Phi Sig has doesn't mean we should be holding back progress to force girls into the bad DG/Theta situation. Let a new sorority come over and give some new girls the chance to build a better experience than they would get if they were left with no choice but to go to DG/Theta.

Uh, the whole point was DG and Theta didn't get the CHANCE to improve like other sororities because they came on one right after the next, too close together. Not survival of the fittest, poor planning on the office of greek life's part.

And people like you are probably the reason they struggle to overcome their reputation even though the both are strong chapters with a lot to offer. You are the problem with greek life.

I don't doubt at all that it was poor planning on the part of the Greek office, but that doesn't negate the point that UD's sorority community is getting overwhelmed number wise and something needs to be put in place to deal with it, and I don't believe it's fair to deliberately hold back another organization's chance to colonize in order to force girls into organizations they don't want to be a part of.

Whether you like their reasons for it or not, there are girls who would rather not join the sororities who are struggling, and that's their personal choice. They deserve a chance to create an experience they DO want to be a part of especially when it makes so much sense to do it given the overflow of girls rushing.

It is a girls personal choice not to join a chapter BUT the amount of girls that do not accept their bids is extremely high at UD compared to other universities. At most schools you accept the bid you are given, and then put your energy into making that chapter great.

At UD I've seen tons of girls unwilling to admit they may belong in a "lower" tier just to rush again the next year and get the same bid. I think there is an ego problem involved with refusing to join a lower tier chapter that should be acknowledged. If those girls would accept their bids and at least give chapters a chance beyond recruitment I think it would make the whole greek system stronger. Then we can colonize new chapters.

I 100 percent agree with you that it's an ego problem. Some people are petty and see a sorority as a way to bolster social status instead of, you know, a sisterhood.

But my problem is I don't think that ego problem will be solved anytime soon. We can refuse to colonize new organizations and instead, but it won't help. Girls will just keep dropping out of recruitment. That's what is happening right now and there's no reason to believe it will change in the near future. I'm of the opinion that the best thing that can happen is we solve the numbers problem right now by bringing someone else to campus because it doesn't seem like NOT allowing them to come over is going to achieve the goal of helping the "lower tiers" anyway.

UD needs a new sorority. This past recruitment there were so many girls rushing but not enough spots. While some girls chose to drop out of rush, many were dropped by all of the sororities. The pledge classes for each sorority are huge.

Recruitment attitudes DO need to change, but I don't see how holding a new organization back is going to change those attitudes.

So are u saying more girls should just join dg or theta just to join instead of dropping?? No! Dg and theta get different girls because they are different people. If girls don't feel comfortable there they should have more options. It's a sad reality but just like how sororities don't want some girls some girls don't want certain sororities. Why should girls that weren't wanted by any other chapter be funneled into dg??? They should have more options. If a new organization comes on and starts doing better than them it's not everyone else's fault... That just means that dg didn't recruit well. Stop feeling bad for yourselves nobody forced you to join these chapters and nobody is going to improve dgs reputaion but dg.

That's so contradictory... U just blasted then for saying they're not different but then you go on to say that girls should just take bids and change the chapter. Bottom line: either dg and theta except that they shouldn't try to become top tier and focus on sisterhood and that be their redeeming quality or keep on trying to recruit better. Don't hand bids put to every girl who didn't get one from anywhere else because then everyone knows your desperate for numbers. i would think dg and theta would want more sororities so that there may be someone below them....but if new chapters join and do better like phi sig then why should they not come on campus??

If girls would rather not be in greek life then take bids to these chapter then that's their choice.... Many of those girls just won't fit in with dg and what they should just join where they don't belong and hope it gets better?? If nobody wants to join nobody wants to join and the chapter should just die out. Just like any club or activity if there's no interest then why have it??

Jesus, no amount of complaining about girls being "stuck up" is going to change the situation here. Many sororities will continue to take overflowing pledge classes, the girls who feel they fit into DG/Theta will accept their bids, and those who DON'T feel that way will continue to drop out of recruitment.

Just because of the numbers situation, the best thing the school can do is allow a new sorority to colonize. Holding back a new sorority's chance when it is clear we need one is unfair and isn't gonna help DG/Theta like you think it will.

^Preach that basically sums it up. Whoever is arguing against more sororities is insecure about their own chapter and I'm sorry cause dg and theta not making numbers isn't a good reason for a national organization not to try to colonize

I think a new chapter is necessary but there is also something to DG not making numbers. They're giving girls bids who aren't accepting, that means the girls they want that would potential change the chapters image are girls they're inviting in. Maybe they're only getting the bottom 50% of their bid list right now and they want that other half. Or they're forced to snap bid just to get a 40 person pledge class so they're giving bids to girls they wouldn't otherwise. I don't think holding back new chapters from colonizing will help, I think it's more that our recruitment is in the spring so it gives girls a lot of time to hear rumors about chapters.

If I remember correctly my roommate in Theta said they made quota this year so I am not sure why that chapter would care.

A new sorority should come, I agree. But the ego thing is something to keep in mind because the girls with those big egos/negative mindsets will be the ones dropping like flies from FSR when they lose their favorites and founding the new chapter, which will lead to an entire chapter with an attitude problem. Phi sig had that problem and it's not a good image to have.

No one is trying to hold anyone back, we all want the community to improve and move forward together. But a new organization could be held back by those attitudes, hence the apprehension. Regardless, the new sorority will be coming no matter what, if not next spring then 2017.

I agree that there may be some attitude issues but like I said above, unfairly holding back a new sorority is not going to change them. Regardless of what you think of Phi Sig they're going nowhere but up. This same argument about new chapter attitudes can be used against colonizing any new chapter anywhere ever. The fact of the matter is that UD's sororities are bursting at the seams and need a new sorority to relieve them of the overflow. A new sorority would even help the IFC community by providing an opportunity for new relations.

Apparently Tri Delta is one of the presenters. Anyone know who else?

Alpha Omicron Pi and Pi Beta Phi are the other two. AOII would be a recolonization of their chapter that closed in 1995. TriDelt and Pi Phi have never had chapters here.

I am deeply saddened to hear that Alpha Omicron Pi was not chosen to recolonize. I was looking forward to getting involved in Greek life again at the U of DE. Best wishes to the sorority that was chosen.
