sorority cuts

Almost no girls get completely cut from sorority rush completely. Most girls drop out because they don't like the ones they have left and don't give them try, or they do what's called "suicideing" where instead of ranking their two sororities left at the end of preference round in order of which one they like best, they only list one sorority because they don't like the other one at all.. then you can get dropped all together and get no bid. Hope this isn't too confusing.

Nobody is really cut from all of the sororities. Single digits probably. And if they are it is because they probably have a reputation that precedes them, or are a severe grade risk.
There is a method called RFM (forget what it stands for) that pretty much all schools use for recruitment. It allows for the most girls to end recruitment with a bid, and at UD while we can't say we guarantee everyone will get a bid, pretty much if you make it to pref round, you're going to get a bid AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT SUICIDE. AKA, only rank 1 sorority during preference round instead of 2, AKA you maximize your options.
Why would anyone not maximize their options? Well, perhaps they have 2 sororities left at pref, but one they "can't really see themselves being in" or whatever vague phrase they use for saying they do not like that one. Well they only put down the first sorority they DO want and leave the other off, meaning even if the other sorority cannot extend them a bid even if the favorite sorority doesn't give that girl one. All this does is make it so that a PNM doesn't have to go to the chapter and turn down the bid herself because she was never extended one; however, this does also eliminate her from potentially becoming a QUOTA ADDITION.
I will explain....

Anyone after those 70 they would only get extended a bid if any of the first 70 ranked another chapter as their number 1 and got a bid from them or if anyone dropped out after ranking chapters at preference round. So Suzy is on both of ABC and XYZ's lists, but further down and both sororities have reached quota.
Suzy will not go bidless though! She maximized her options, and now she will become a quota addition for whichever chapter is smaller. So ABC has a total of 180 members and XYZ has a total of 170 members and BOTH of them would have extended her a bid, so Suzy gets a bid from XYZ! Had ABC been smaller, she would have gotten a bid to ABC. Had she not been on anyone's bid list, she would not have gotten a bid either. However, CHAPTERS DO NOT INVITE YOU TO PREF ROUND UNLESS THEY CAN SEE YOU AS A PART OF THEIR CHAPTER. That is why is you make it to pref round, you are probably getting a bid from someone. SUZY HAS NO IDEA SHE IS A QUOTA ADDITION, AND NO ONE ELSE WILL EITHER EXCEPT PEOPLE INVOLVED IN RECRUITMENT FROM PANHEL AND FROM THE CHAPTER. So now XYZ might end up with 71 new members or more if there are more quota additions (which there usually are).
Now, had Suzy only ranked ABC on her preference card, she would NOT have been eligible to be a quota addition. So if she was too far down ABC's list or not on it at all, she is not eligible to get a bid from from XYZ as a quota addition since she left them off of her pref list.

I know that was super long and super confusing, but now you see, there is almost no way for a girl to end up bidless unless she herself takes herself out of the process, is below a 2.5 GPA, doesn't show up to a sorority she was invited to during a round, or suicide ranks after pref round.
There is also something called “Snap Bidding”, that is not to be confused with quota additions. If at the end of the bid matching process is a house has not made quota, they can “snap bid”. A snap bid is a bid extended to a girl who withdrew from the recruitment process for whatever reason, but that the chapter was still inviting back. So Sally had 3 sororities on her invite list and ABC was one of them. If everyone ABC extended bids to accepts them, they will have 68 new members, 2 below quota so they can snap bid. Sally withdrew from recruitment for whatever reason, but on bid day she gets a call from someone on ABCs recruitment team telling her that ABC was still felt like she was a good candidate for membership and would to extend a bid to her. She can accept or decline during this phone call. This is done at the same time as bid matching and only occurs on Bid Day so no one except the recruitment chairs and the PNM herself will know if they were a snap bid since it is done in conjunction with the regular bid matching process. Girls who are “snap bids” receive their bids along with all of the other PNM’s and participate in all of the Bid Day activities

That novel was like 99% true. The part about the quota addition going to the smaller chapter is not. I have worked on recruitment before and the quota addition girl will go to whatever house would have extended her a bid had she been higher on their list. If both sororities she ranked would be given her a bid, the one she ranked higher will be the one she gets a bid from. Just wanted to clear that up so PNMs don't start asking the size of chapters next lol

Yes ladies, this is how recruitment works! Read it! You do not go bidless in recruitment. If you make it to pref round and rank all of your options throughout recruitment, you will get a bid!

this was great to read because i am planning to transfer to udel as a sophomore and since it is such a big school and i missed the initial freshman frenzy of friend making, i thought it would be a great way to be involved in a smaller community! i wasnt worried about ending up in a sorority i didnt like because you typically get asked back by the girls you click with, but i was nervous about not getting a bid at all! anyways thanks for the explanation, im super excited!
