i mean they make you stand out a little more and there is not harm in getting them, but they won't guarantee you anything.
It is sort of nice to have them as in we can tell you a part from the 30 other Nicoles with brown wavey hair, you know?

who do you get letters from?

You get them from alums of the sororities. So if your mom has a coworker who was an AEPhi in college, she could write you one for aephi. Or if your best friends older sister who graduated college last year and was in chi o they can write one. They don't have to have gone to UD they just have to have been initiated into one of the chapters we have here.
If you have a friend who is an initiated current member of a sorority we have here at UD then some chapters let them "sponser" you. They just have to send the chapter here whatever paperwork that chapter needs for sponsorship.
There is also something called being a legacy to a chapter. If your mom was a DG in college then that makes you a legacy to DG. Basically a chapter will take into account that a relative of yours was in the same sorority. Every chapter has different rules on legacies. Some allow moms, gandmoms, sisters, aunts....others only allow mom's and sisters. Some allow step mom's and step sisters, others don't. You can find out who does online or talk with whoever is a sorority member in your family!
