Looking Back at it

by: Paul

Crazy how in 2019, there were 9 off-campus fraternities:

-FIJI
-KA
-Machi
-Sig Pi
-Kapsig
-DKE
-APES
-SigEp
-Sig Nu

Those were some crazy times if anyone here remembers. Newer classes a few years from now aren't gonna know what off campus frats were like.

Crazy that also sig ep, sig nu, ka, Fiji, kap sig and machi were all middle/top frats too (and sig pi was also a few years before that), there was way less of a stigma then about being off campus than there is now which is sad because it really doesn’t change the type of guys you have just what you can and can’t do…

I guess. There was a huge stigma against off campus fraternities when it was just Machi and Apes. They were the only two because every other off campus fraternity before them died. No one lasted longer than 2 years.

Old head here time for a history lesson: there were 5 OG off campus frats that got kicked off: Sig Chi, Sig Pi, AEPi, DKE and Sammy…

Sammy was the first kicked off because they killed a kid at a dage, they immediately disbanded and nobody had ever really been an off campus frat so they just kinda became a friend group until the members graduated and they faded to oblivion…

the second frat kicked off was sig chi, who at the time was the top frat, the majority of their members formed machi while some other ones started phi si. Machi was the first real off campus frat but had a stigma during rush vs other good frats, but because they started so high they were still like an upper middle tier socially, but being off campus they were definitely the black sheep of the top and upper mid fraternities for being off campus before KA Fiji Sig NU Kap Sig and Sig Ep got kicked / suspended…

AEPI got kicked off around the same time and was upper middle when they got kicked off, they formed Apes during suspension and had a couple bad incidents that really started to get the ball rolling on UD hating off campus frats. Apes had a stigma but because of the incidents it was more of a bottom of the bottom stigma and creepy stigma but they did a decent job rebuilding that in recent years after merging with DKE in 2019, who was suspended for a few years but were a bottom tier when suspended unlike the others so they would die out if they did not merge with APES, seems to have worked out for both as APES isn’t as stigmatized as they were before…

The other original off campus frat was sig pi who got kicked off around upper middle tier, but their members started to stop associating with the chapter when off campus. Which made them fall into the void of being not important but didn’t get stigma because of that. Thing is they always kept a really cool core of guys so now that they’re back on they’re already going up and quickly.

Another cool vibe I’m getting is that most of these fears on these list have a optimistic future except for a few like maybe Fiji and apes

I wouldn’t really count Sig Ep. All of the fraternities listed, except then, received the death penalty (4 years off campus minimum). They were only off for one year and everyone knew they were coming back on as soon as possible.
