Pledging length?

Been rushing and made good friends in some “top” houses. I really wanna pledge but my parents are strict and will genuinely stop paying for school if pledging affects me. Is it true that it only lasts 6 weeks? Some telling me it’s a lot longer but others telling me they just say that to scare you. Please give it to me straight
