Honest Advice of Greek Life at Vandy
by: CO '25I have seen Abolish Greek Life Instagram and I am worried tbh. As a member of Class of 2025, do you all advise us to still look into greek life (If we are interested in it)? Are the stories on there exaggerated or have things changed somewhat? I am interested in joining a frat eventually but I am not sure after going over Instagram. I have noticed the Instagram has died down somewhat. What do you all suggest?

Ignore the trolls.
It’s not unreasonable to have concerns about joining something that may seem maligned from a distance. Thankfully I think the heft of abolish on campus has died significantly as people realized: a. the Greek community did a solid amount of self-reflection and has made good, good-faith progress on the most compelling claims by Abolish, b. many of Abolish’s other claims were both massively overstated and/or driven mostly by personal vendettas rather than principle (it’s not that hard to figure out which), and c. the hypocrisy of many of the people behind it and their clear intent on using a need for reform as a way to accrue social capital rather than pursue compromise that would leave everyone on campus better off.
If this is a genuine concern of yours (not just for optics) there will be some houses that are more or less suited to you, but you should figure that out on your own. Either way you should experience Greek life for yourself and decide what’s best from you from there, rather than letting anyone on the internet try to sway you one way or another.

Hey man, I'll admit that I was also a little hesitant to join a frat this past year, but reading those AGL posts made me realize that I NEEDED to be a part of greek life. Are you reading the same posts that I did? How could that instagram account possibly do anything other than convince you to join greek life?
