by: pnmhow does pref round work? if theta had 5 spots for example, would they bring 6 girls to pref night or like 8 and just hope they got their top 5? (used theta as an example, talking about any competitive sorority)

It depends on individual return rates. Let's use 50 spots as a number just because it's a little bit easier and way more realistic. A house that only has 50% of girls returning would ask around 100 girls. A house with 70% returns would have about 71. A house with 90% returns would have about 56. Nobody knows precisely what the return rates are, not even the members of a particular house.
