by: CuriousCurious how greek life at Vanderbilt is compared to other SEC schools. My assumption is that it would be nothing like going through recruitment at Ole Miss or like being hazed in a 'Bama frat.

I don't know that much about greek life at other SEC schools but from what I can tell greek life at vandy is very different. Sorority recruitment is not nearly as exclusive from what I can tell. Sororities overall seem to be less blonde and preppy and a lot don't fit the "typical" sorority mold. Rush is deferred to second semester so it seems like people have more friends in other sororities. Also we don't live in the houses which makes the experience different.

Not like many SEC schools in a few ways. Many SEC schools have a high in-state population, so where you end up can be determined before you set foot on campus and by your high school reputation, camps, clubs and network of legacies, alum and friends. It can be rigid and social mobility can be difficult because everyone already knows everyone else and their background, and at some SEC schools alum have heavy hands in recruitment. At Vandy it can be very random and much more socially fluid as people are from all over the country and connections may mean knowing one to a few girls, and they may not even be in the same sororities. There are plenty of girls at Vandy who are in different tiers then they would have been if they'd have gone to their state's SEC. Some by choice based on hometown legacy or alum chapter strength, which can be a big deal depending on where you're from, and some because they didn't know anyone or stayed low key in the fall. Add in spring rush, no real greek housing, the bigger focus on academics, and it's just less of an experience and less defining at Vandy. Not a bad thing, just not as big of a deal. Maybe even a good thing.

Vandy attracts a completely different student body than most SECs. There are also more northerners and Californians at Vandy who just want to have fun at Vandy whereas southerners are more concerned with legacy tradition and alumn networks back home. Since it's not a big experience changer at Vandy it's not as competitive.

It's competitive in a differentt way and less relevant overall. Since people are from all over it helps to know someone from your high school or if you have an in-house legacy, family member or friend. If you don't have these random connections then just go hard socially in the fall if you want specific letters. Lots of reinvention at Vandy. Lots of random outcomes. Some girls from the south especially do pref legacy or strong alumn sororitys over perceived popular sororitys at Vandy because it's not as relevant. The rank arguments on this site are kind of a joke because it's so random at Vandy and the only people going hard are those who feel a personal sense of relevancy they didn't experience in high school. Everyone else realizes that Greek life at Vandy is a bit more low key.
