is aopi run by the dixie mafia?

by:

A friend of mine at another school said that the AOPi National is totally corrupt and run by a bunch of scam artists from TN? Does anyone know anything about what is going on? Their reputation nationally seems to be in shambles and rumor are that the current board is going to be thrown out because of all the legal issues and conflicts of interest? Anything to dish?

Word on the street is the vandy aopi chapter advisor told everyone last chapter that the chapter owed over $20,000 for their formal on Saturday(!!). After my good friend, who is an aopi, told me this, I knew something shady was going on. Apparently a ton of girls are really angry because the chapter had no clue they owed any money. I feel bad for them. If my house pulled that, so many girls would drop.

Yes, this national is worst of the worst in terms of shady dealings and financial trickery. They have a business plan to open 5-6 new chapters a year (dart board approach) with the idea that maybe 2 will work out in the long run. They don't support the new chapters with financial or human resources and they fee and charge them to death. In a sense they are preying on the poor people that are desparate to go greek and are willing to pay any price to join up. The Michigan chapter is the latest casualty of this strategy as nearly 40% of the first 2 classes dropped because fees/dues etc were nearly $5,000 more per year than most expensive house on campus. The MIchigan chapter is teetering on the brink of being viable. Compare the Michigan experience of Gamma Phi that got huge financial support and human resources from its national and has fees and dues in line with the rest of the chapters on campus and actually now has a thriving new chapter. Just do a simple google search and the litigation and stories about AOPi are quite staggering. Its shocking to me that anyone would want to be affiliated with these ethics and tactics. What I find so interesting is that my chapter (not AOPi) has had issues with our national and not once did I feel disrespected or taken advantage of at all. This is saying quite alot as we agreed with virtually nothing our national had to say on the issue we were in dispute about. Even so, we as college students were treated with total respect.

Gamma Phi has the worst situation as far as colonies not coming to fruition the past ten years. A lot of the time GPhi was chosen as a second, third or fourth stack, and buy the time they were going to finally colonize GPhi quit because there either were not enough women left to join on campus or especially because there were not good enough housing options on campus. GPhi screws campuses by accepting to colonize then complaining there is no proper housing/ not enough pnms. Why does GPhi not do its due diligence on the matters of housing/pnm availability BEFORE saying yes to being a colony, they change their minds very often about that.

I just looked and apparently they have a multi-year lease on a house and more girls who want to live in it than can fit... doesn't sound like the plug is getting pulled on Michigan AOPi any time soon

All one has to do is go the the U of M website to see that this is untrue. All Greek fees are posted. AOPi’s are in line with many houses, and even less than some others. If you look back through GR, absolutely no one else has posted about the the Vandy formal. Even if that number is accurate, divided by the entire chapter, it isn’t a staggering sum. Nobody says whether their formals are included in fees. And, take note, it’s the local chapter that plans its formals. So if they ran up a 20k bill for a formal, look to the social chairman/committee, not the AOPi national headquarters. People repeat rumors without doing any research. It just shows how stupid this site really is.

...and I don't mean Tom.

This business of the same malevolent GR poster delving into AOPi financial information and asking way too personal financial questions of campus AOPi members all over GR needs to stop. Seriously.

IDK, perhaps this poster was originally at one time an AOPi new member (NOT initiated) and she quit in her hissy-fit and formed a new sorority-type organization (thus the poster's claim she is not an AOPi). Then she made it her vindictive business to spread hatred and venom against all things AOPi all over GR.

She fails the panhellenic test of working together for the betterment of women and society. How are her GR posts (not just here) positive and encouraging? You can tell the true panhellenic sisters among women because they are lifting up women instead of putting them down.

To Ms. Petty: it is in the true spirit of panhellenic to care deeply about all sisters equally and to try to save future PNMs from the issues associated with AOPi national. I am not sure how you (or anyone for that matter) can make a case defending the actions of AOPi national as their track record speaks for itself. The Michigan info is common knowledge on campus and I truly feel for the women that joined that organization in good faith. The situation where faith was placed in a national and that same faith was not reciprocated was what I and many many others find ENRAGING. This is truly a national not worthy of our collective panhellenic trust, faith or MONEY. Do some research before you come on GR and bash away.

It is in the true spirit of panhellenic not to tear-down with words/actions, or rumor monger about, your fraternal group or another fraternal group EVER. Live up to your sorority values and oaths.

Would you mind terribly moving back onto the GR pages of Cal at Berkeley with your postings? The women of Vanderbilt's AOPi chapter have no beef with their headquarters and your posts seem to be fixated upon another chapter of AOPi. Thank you for your hospitality and bless your little ole heart.

To those naysayers that continue to blindly support AOPI national here is a discussion of how they treated the local chapters that 'held out' against their property takeover plan. The University of Minnesota lawsuit opinion was one of the funniest legal documents I have ever read! Enjoy and give this some thought when you think that your status as a 100 yr old chapter makes any difference to the folks that run your national.
