wtf is happening to vandy?
by: Southern bro
Vandy used to be a school for wealthy Southerners, most of whom attended prep school. There have always been northerners here but they were a minority. Now since Zeppos came in he is wasting hundreds of millions each year by giving financial aid to poor students who often aren't academically qualified. It used to be that if you went to MBA(the top Nashville prep school) and had good grades you'd get in automatically but that's not so anymore. His myopic focus on increasing diversity is wasting money. Furthermore, most of the applicants who wouldn't have attended before won't make enough to make a donation even large enough to cover the financial aid that was generated. It's important to attract the best students but most of them come from wealthy families and attended prep school or a wealthy public school. There is a very high correlation between wealth and income.
The student body is unrecognizable from how it was when my dad attended . It used to be that Vandy girls were Southern belles. Now I'd wager that over 99% of them never even attended a debutante ball. You're lucky to find more than a dime or two in each top sorority. I could go on and talk about how Zeppos has destroyed Greek Life here but I'll rest my case and end my rant.

Vandy is better ranked and harder to get into now than it was a long time ago. Vandy used to be in the Wake Forest/UNC/Tufts category of schools and now it's in the Northwestern/WashU/Duke/any t20 that isn't HYPS.
People here are less attractive because finding attractive and smart people is rare. Also if you want to be accomplished you need to have some capability of sacrifice/prioritizing your school work which is why Vandy isn't as fun anymore.

Yes, I'm a Vandy grad and hate what has happened to the school (Debutantes aside - I wasn't one). When Valedictorians and NMSQT finalists from great prep schools (northern or southern) can't get in (I live in the North) something is wrong. Alums are VERY disgruntled about the fact that VU doesn't give them the time of day. My kids can't go there because they are white americans not foreign exchange students who will take their VU expertise back to Asia or wherever and never support the university. And all of you liberals will understand when you have kids who can't get in.... Get a clue because Vandy won't care about you when you are out of there except for your money...

There is nothing wrong with diversity and Vandy needs some of course, but it's a private school for crying out loud. We don't have to educate the world if it means losing our roots. We had a great niche as a smart, elite Southern school but to lose tradition and culture is losing potential students and alumni support. OP is right - how many of these foreigners and charity cases are going to be alumni donors, and who wants to go to a school with no social life?

obviously not everyone who graduates from vanderbilt is going to be rich- white or minority. But just because someone comes here on financial aid doesn't mean that they don't want to/are able to better themselves and become successful. Just because you didn't grow up with money doesn't mean that you can't one day be successful?!?!? sorry some of us don't have inheritance safety nets to rely on
