It's best if you find someone to write one for you because it is yet another way for someone to say something nice about you so that you stand apart from the crowd. However, if you do not come up with someone to write one for you, the chapter will find someone to do it if they want to issue you a bid. This is what a lot of girls who have just gone through rush don't know because they have never been on the other side. So to tell someone they don't need a rec in order to join a sorority is absolutely incorrect and also shows their ignorance. Besides, why would you give up the opportunity for someone to praise you glowingly so that you can stand apart from the crowd? Girls with recs that are submitted ahead of rush have an edge.
