Don't listen to the party shirt hype. It's a good move to buy a few house shirts or Greekwide shirts, but don't feel obligated to buy every single one you see. I love 60% of the freshman year shirts I bought. 40% were a waste, and at $23 (roughly) per shirt, it's a financial bump. You'll want money to go out to lunch or dinner every now and then. You'll want money for the bars. You'll want money for a fun trip or two. You'll want money for some regrettable fashion trends. Formal won't be cheap. Don't feel like you have to go on formal every year. You'll need a suit or two, for class and for fraternity functions. Please don't be the guy who blows all his money on "tobacco accessories" or pricey alcohols. Your body can process cheap booze perfectly fine, now. And a $200 glass piece is a waste. (Not so fun fact: the average sorority woman cannot tell the difference between Smirnoff and Grey Goose when poured into the same cup, or into each others bottles ;) ). After Freshman year, your expenses will normalize outside of travel. You'll figure out to what extent you can afford to "play frat boy" and to what extent you'll need to be a responsible adult. It's hard to project a budget (I'd say I spent $1000 a semester on additional fun stuff), because it depends on your attitude towards money and the house you're in.
