It's tradition, honestly. While the civil war is a passing subject up North, down South you can still find traces of its influence on society. It's also Southern culture that puts a lot of emphasis on your upbringing and family name, so kids from the North are seen as outsiders or intruders to this idea. In actuality, with the way Clemson takes its students (which unless I'm mistaken must be at least 60% in state), you could argue that the competition for out of state spots could much more competitive and therefore result in quality students coming to Clemson from out of state. You'd also have to take into account the fact that public education up North in states like Massachusetts and New Jersey is much better than in South Carolina. Greek Life seems to rectify this problem through rush by weeding out all of the less impressive in-state students.
